TB Skin Test Mandates


Prior to beginning employment any school district employee new to the school system must provide evidence of a tuberculosis examination within the 60 days prior to employment to determine that he/she is free of tuberculosis. The tuberculosis examination consists of an approved intradermal skin test which, if positive, shall be followed by an x-ray of the lungs. This examination is a condition of initial employment and is to be done at the employee's expense unless otherwise provided according to district policy. This test can be obtained at their doctor's office or any local health clinic.

Persons transferring from another school district meet the TB skin test requirement by providing proof of a negative tuberculosis examination within the last four years or proof of exemption due to a previous positive test.


All employees who test negative upon initial employment require skin testing once every four years. Tulare County Office of Education School Health Programs assist schoool districts with these ongoing tuberculosis skin testing requirements. Each October school nurses provide county-wide skin testing and follow-up at minimum cost to the district. Employees due to have his/her TB skin test before the end of October are eligible for skin testing provided at various locations throughout Tulare County.

If an employee has a documented positive skin test which has been followed by a negative x-ray, tuberculosis screening is not required and the employee is exempt from future testing. Employees who convert from a negative to a positive skin test will be referred to the Tulare County Health Department for follow-up care and medical clearance.


Volunteers who spend a significant amount of time with students and/or staff follow the same requirements as school district employees.
