Profiles in Character
PVWH scholarship winner

Kate Verhoeven
Senior, Central Valley Christian High School, Visalia

Kate Verhoeven honored for excellence and character

Kate was selected by the Tulare County Office of Education to receive the Provident‑Salierno Pursuing Victory with Honor Scholarship, an honor reserved for students who exemplify integrity, sportsmanship, and leadership on and off the field.

Reflecting on what “Pursuing Victory with Honor” means to her, Kate shared that her understanding of victory has evolved over time. “I used to think victory meant being the best player on a team and winning games. While that can be a part of it, true victory means showing up, working hard even when it is difficult, respecting teammates, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” Her words reflect the maturity and integrity she brings to every environment she’s part of.

Those who have worked closely with Kate describe her as a young woman whose character is as impressive as her accomplishments. Mr. Hughes, Dean of Student Life, noted that “Kate possesses a determination, uncommon humility, and courage to lead. Kate is a great athlete and gifted student, yet she is always the first to highlight others and deflect attention away from herself.” Her leadership style — quiet, steady, and others‑focused — has made a lasting impact on the CVC community.

Her English teacher, Mr. Hackbarth, echoed this admiration, describing her as “a thoughtful, responsible, and loyal young lady who will excel in her goals to major in marketing.” His confidence in her future reflects the strong academic foundation and personal integrity she has demonstrated throughout her time at CVC.

Kate plans to continue her education by majoring in marketing or agricultural communications.

Dom Simmons

Dom Simmons
Senior
Crescent Valley Public Charter School II, Visalia

Dom's Everyday Kindness and Empathy

Nominator Brett McGinnis shares, “Dom could easily be considered for both Respect and Caring based on her daily actions. She consistently shows warmth and kindness to everyone around her at school. Despite struggling with anxiety, Dom regularly compliments and says kind words to other students and staff members almost every day she is present. She treats everyone she interacts with — regardless of differing viewpoints or interests — with complete respect and kindness. When someone needs help, Dom is always willing to assist. She is thoughtful, often noting what matters to people and responding with drawings, small gifts, or efforts to learn more about their interests to make them feel seen and cared for.”

Dom explains, "Genuine caring comes from within — it's not something that usually takes much thought. I've always been very empathetic, which helps me connect with and understand others. Every person needs some support in this rough life, so if a simple compliment, phone call, or small handmade gift can brighten someone's day, I'd gladly do it."

She also credits her aunt as a major influence, “My aunt is my biggest role model. She started from nothing, crashed hard in life, then got a second chance and became more successful than ever. She pushes me to be the best person I can be, work hard, and strive for my dreams. She has definitely helped shape who I am today."

Haydin Priest

Haydin Priest
Sixth Grade
Shannon Ranch Elementary School, Visalia

Honoring Haydin’s Kindness and Character

Nominator Adrienne Terry shares, “I first met Haydin Priest when she was 10 years old, and even then, she carried herself with a rare mix of kindness and determination. Now, as a sixth grader at Shannon Ranch Elementary, she has stepped into leadership with confidence and purpose. After two years of watching and learning from the student leaders before her, Haydin entered this year ready to serve and inspire.

She is the kind of student who quietly but consistently makes a positive impact. In the cafeteria, the classroom, the play yard, the front office, and the library, she is quick to offer help and sets an example of responsibility and respect. She is not only a talented student‑athlete and performer in the arts, but also a dedicated scholar and a loyal, compassionate friend. Haydin shows fairness, caring, and integrity in her actions, making her a true role model for her peers.

From the first day I met her, Haydin’s warmth and spirit stood out. Seeing her grow into a young woman who uplifts others is a blessing. I am deeply proud of her and confident that she will continue to be an asset to her school and her community.”
